Fastest Growing Careers for Women Today

Over the next decade some jobs will experience a surge in growth while others will wane. A subset of these jobs employ women at a much higher percentage than men. The fastest growing jobs for women in America are those that predominately employ women and have a high expected rate of growth. A large portion of these jobs are in the health care industry, the growth of which is due to  increasing demand for individuals who can work assistant level positions, filling the gaps left behind by overwhelmed management.

The following are five jobs that have particularly high percentage of women employed and also are expected to grow much faster than average over the next decade. This is not to say that these jobs are the highest paying for women, nor is there a guarantee that these jobs will continue to employ more females to males in the future.

Home Health Aides

Job growth for home health care aides is expected to increase 46.1% between 2008 and 2018.

Home health aides occupy an increasingly important role in health care. Home health aides top the list for job growth due to the aging population and a limited barrier to entry. Individuals can quickly take the classes necessary and begin working within a few months. The need for home health care is only expected to grow as the baby boomer population shifts into their twilight years. Home health care aides occupy an important role in the health care industry by assisting in the care of patients outside of hospitals, clinics and nursing homes.

Job growth for estheticians is expected to grow 38% between the years of 2008 and 2018.

The realm of cosmetology has traditionally been the considered the domain of women. Not exclusively, of course, but in general. This may be attributed to society’s more stringent guidelines for beauty regarding women or any number of other factors that place an emphasis on femininity and the importance of beautification. It may be these very same factors that have created a growth in the skin care industry. The need for estheticians is expected to increase much more quickly than average, particularly due to a better understanding of skin care and skin damage and the desire to remain visually young.

Athletic Trainers

Job growth for athletic trainers is expected to increase 37% between 2008 and 2018.

Athletic trainers work with a variety of people from professional athletes to school children. Athletic trainers are not fitness trainers. The role of an athletic trainer is to tape, bandage and treat immediate injury and train individuals in the proper use of equipment to prevent injury. Hospitals employ athletic trainers to provide preventative health care education and job growth is expected to be high due to the reduction in health care costs through such education. Preventative health care is a growing field and athletic trainers are on the forefront, particularly the women who make up 88.9% of employed athletic trainers.

Paralegals and Legal Assistants

Job growth for paralegals and legal assistants are expected to grow 28% between 2008 and 2018.

Paralegals, also known as legal assistants, will see a large increase in job growth due to the continued and growing need for qualified individuals to assist in the preparation of legal documents and other related tasks within the workplace. Paralegals cover many of the same responsibilities as lawyers, but are prohibited from duties considered as “practicing the law”. Nonetheless, the role of paralegals is varying and evolving, the function they play in government agencies and law offices allows for those offices to run smoothly and efficiently.

Medical Assistants

Job growth for medical assistants is expected to grow by 34% between 2008 and 2018.

Over 90% of medical assistants employed currently are women.  The field itself has grown and is expected to continue to grow at a very high rate over the next decade due to the increased need for medical professionals. Additionally, medical assistants occupy several roles in the medical industry: administrative, clinical or a mixture of both. The responsibilities of an assistant can be very specific or very broad depending on the employer and the size of the place of employment. As medical needs of the populace increase due to an aging population, medical assistants of all types will be required to fill new roles as well as replace retiring individuals.
